How I overcame my fear of death

Do you fear death?

I overcame my fear of death, and so can you.

I used to be terrified of death and life felt meaningless.

I grew up in a loving family, married a great man, I was blessed with two beautiful, healthy children, I excelled at work and won awards and even though I was very thankful and always tried to be positive, I was unhappy. I felt broken inside and went to great lengths to try and fix myself with therapy, medication, meditation and positive reinforcement. Nothing worked.

As an adult my family and I attended church and Bible study groups often at times, but our attendance wasn’t consistent. The reason why I didn’t feel drawn to church and regularly made excuses not to go, was the fact that my spirit was dead. To me the scariest thing about this part of my story is the fact I had no idea I was spiritually dead. I hoped I was okay with God, if He really exists, but in hindsight I can see that deep down inside of me, I feared death because I didn’t truly believe or trust in God. At the time I couldn’t admit to myself that I subconsciously believed this earthly life is all I have. I didn’t want to talk about death or think about it. I decided to simply focus on what I thought was important: the here, the now, caring and providing for my family.

I used to pray to this God I didn’t really know and who I didn’t believe in, when I was scared or needed help. But I didn’t think He had the answer to my problems or the means to fix my troubled heart. I hoped someone was listening to my prayers, but most of the time it just felt like I was talking to myself. I never denied God or turned my back on Him though, I kept the door open. He might be there, or He might not. And that gave me a measure of hope. But I really wanted Him to be real and was terrified of even admitting to myself that I didn’t fully believe.

Every night after I laid down my head and drifted off, reaching that place between dreaming and still being awake, a sobering truth, a frightening revelation from deep within me, would remind me that time is passing at an absurd rate and yet another fleeting day had gone by. Soon I would grow old and die. Eventually I reached a point where I was totally exhausted all the time an tired of life.

Does my story sound familiar? Can you relate? Then, please read on. There is hope for you and much more to life than you could have ever imagined.

So how did everything change for me? How did I get over my fear of death?

In a nutshell I met Jesus. Yes, I actually met Him personally one evening in my bedroom and my life has never been the same since.

I will never forget that joyous moment, the first time I entered into His glorious and loving presence. I literally fell down on the floor next to my bed to worship Him. I was in absolute awe of the fact that all I learned about God over the years, the head knowledge I gained, but was secretly skeptical about, was all true. That night He revealed Himself supernaturally to me and I was baptised with the Holy Spirit. God is real, Jesus is real and everything written in the Bible is so incredibly real and true.

Because of Christ I am not afraid of death anymore.

I have peace because I know I have eternal life. (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)

I realise now being afraid of death is not necessarily a bad thing.

Being fearful is supposed to push you towards God, because your soul is in grave danger if you do not belong to Christ.

I you don’t have a relationship with Jesus you should be terrified by the thought of death and hell. Our human hearts and minds can’t fathom the everlasting horror what awaits the non-believer.

Perhaps you are one of those people who say you are not afraid of death, because you believe in what you can see. You think that when you die, it is all over. You won’t know pain and suffering anymore. Maybe this is a thought that comforts you. Please, don’t be comforted by this lie. If this is you, a warning bell should be going off right about now. You are in an even worse place than the non-believer who fears death. You are living in contented ignorance and eternal regret will be your fate the very moment you breathe out your last breath.

Please don’t stop reading. You are not reading this by chance.

You have to face the reality of death now. You have to make up your mind about Jesus today. Who do you say Jesus is?

I overcame my fear of death, by facing my doubts and my skepticism about God. I decided to once and for all search for the truth. I understood, that if God is real, I will find evidence for his life, burial and resurrection. And if I come to the conclusion that it is all just a fairytale, then at least I will know the truth and can live my life according to it.

But God didn’t disappoint me. He never does. I was surprised to find mountains of evidence. And I am a sceptic no more. I will never be again.

Some sceptics look at the amazing historical evidence of the miraculous healings that Jesus performed during His earthly ministry and His resurrection from the dead, and they are still not convinced. There is surely enough evidence to convince anyone, believe me.

In the end not believing is a heart issue, not a mind issue. You have to ask yourself, do you struggle to believe in God, or have you already decided He doesn’t exist?

If your answer is the latter, then no amount of evidence will ever soften your hardened heart.

But please know, God is speaking to you through my testimony.

Don’t wait another day. It might be too late for you.

You have to make a choice.

Here is a practical exercise for you. Imagine two doors are in front of you. One door leads to heaven and the other to hell. Just entertian me for a minute.

There is no other escape. You have to make a choice.

Most will say: Duh! Of course they will choose the door to heaven, if there is such a place. But what an awful surprise you will get, when you reach the end of your life, realise there was life beyond the grave after all and you find the door to heaven will not open for you, even though you wanted to go there.

The door to heaven will remain locked because while you were still on earth, you should have chosen, not the correct door, but the One who holds the keys to the doors. After death, you will never get the opportunity to make that choice again.

The truth is, Jesus defeated death and he holds the keys to death and hell. (Revelation 1:18)

Now I am going to speak absolute truth in love to you.

There is only one God and one way to heaven. His name is Jesus. You are either for Christ or against Him. (Matthew 12:30)

No one sits on the fence, since the fence belongs to the devil. Everyone who worships anything or anyone other than the Trinity of God the Father, Jesus Christ His son and the Holy Spirit, is lost.  By default, because of the first man’s sin, all were born in sin, are in a fallen state and belong to satan and the kingdom of darkness. (Romans 3:23)

Only through Jesus can we be reunited with the Father. (Romans 5:12-21) (1 Corinthians 15:45)

The devil will do his best to make you worship or believe anything else but Jesus. Just look around you and tell me this isn’t true. The devil doesn’t care what you believe, as long as it is not the truth. And that is why there are so many so-called subjective truths in the world. (John 8:44)

Satan is the god and inventor of atheism, naturalism, humanism, mystic practices, new age, materialism, hedonism, (which is the pursuit of pleasure), apathy, ‘wokeness’ (being enlightened and socially just) and all other well or lesser known religions. He is even the god of religions posing as progressive or liberal Christianity. These religions are all demonic, but present themselves as truth and light. Scripture says the devil is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and is prowling around like a lion, looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8)

He is the thief that kills, steals and destroys. (John 10:10) And currently he is devouring and deceiving millions of people by a multitude of well-established lies. (2 Thessalonians 2: 9-10)

Once you receive Jesus, His Spirit will open your eyes and reveal the true nature of reality to you. He will reveal objective truth to you.

He is the only way to eternal life. He opens doors no one can close and he closes doors no one can open. (Revelation 3:7)

Will you allow Him to open the door to heaven for you?

Jesus holds the keys to death and hell.

He is the only way, the only narrow gate to pass through to eternal life and the only way to escape death. Only Him, and Him alone. (Matthew 7:13-14)

Am I being narrow minded to say that Jesus is the only way to heaven? No. Jesus Himself said He is the only way. (John 14:6)

But what about all those other gods people worship you ask?

I will say this respectfully because many good people are deceived by false religions, but this is the only truth, there are no other ‘gods’ but the God of the Bible. (Isaiah 43:10) He is the great I AM. (Exodus 3:14)

There is only one God and one way to heaven. His name is Jesus. You are either for Christ or against Him. (Matthew 12:30)

Only Jesus can save you.

When your blindfold is removed, you will clearly see the people of the world running around in darkness after meaningless pleasures and endeavours, worshipping themselves and their self-proclaimed ‘godly minds’. They live according to their own truth, lust and self-created moral code, which is one big fat lie. (1 Peter 4:2) They believe they are good people but are lost and have no reverence for God, because they do not believe in Him and they worship themselves. (Proverbs 1:7) (Exodus 20:3)

Once you are awakened by the Spirit of God (Acts 2:4), you will realise that you have been living in a make-believe world straight out of the 1999 blockbuster, the Matrix. Will you take the red pill or the blue pill? For those who have never seen the movie, the red pill refers to the willingness to learn of a life-changing truth and taking the blue pill means you deny truth and keep on living in false security and contented ignorance.

Will you take the red pill or the blue pill?

There is no such thing as subjective truth.

Your truth, my truth, their truth, is no truth at all.

They are lies from satan.

Jesus is objective truth, the only truth. It has always been about Him, even before time began. He is singularity. He is exclusive and not inclusive, thus not everyone goes to a ‘better place’ after they die.

You are either in or you are out. But still he loves all and wants no-one to perish. (2 Peter 3:9) He accepts everyone who repents of their sins and is willing to receive Him. (Romans 10:13) But he will not compromise His holiness to accommodate man’s socially acceptable and ungodly agendas. Some may be offended by what I say, but Jesus Himself said many will not receive Him, or accept absolute truth. People are offended by Jesus because they love, justify and celebrate their sin. The true light came into the world, but people loved darkness more than light. (John 3:19). And the darkness squirms in the presence of light and flees, because when light fills dark corners, all will be revealed. (Luke 8:17) The Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword. (Hebrews 4:12)

When Jesus walked the earth He said He didn’t come to the world to bring peace, but a sword. (Matthew 10:34) He said that families would be divided because of Him and His message. Of course He loves families and marriages, after all, these holy institutions were created by Him. He simply meant the truth will not be welcomed by everyone. They will be offended by His Gospel and there will be strife and division in families because of Him. (Matthew 10:35-36)  He also guaranteed that everyone who accepts and loves the truth, will be persecuted and many of His followers will be hated and killed. (John 15:18-27) The hate towards true Christians are fueled by the lies of the evil one.

Jesus didn’t come to bring peace, but a sword.

So why would you choose Jesus and subject yourself to persecution?

Because He is worthy of your worship and He is the only escape out of the evil world. He is the only way to heaven. If you want to keep your life, you will lose it, but if you are willing to lose your life for His name’s sake, you will find it. (Luke 17:33)

I read the other day that the word used for repentance in the original Greek New Testament of the Bible is metanoia. Metanoia means changing your mind about someone of something. Repenting is more than acknowledging our sins and asking God for forgiveness. It is a complete change of heart and mind. (Acts 3:19)

You need to cast out all your former beliefs and misconceptions about God and agree with all that He says. You have to decide to submit yourself completely to His Word. You have to believe His Word in its entirety, as the only truth and your highest authority. You have to agree that you are wretched, pitiful, naked and poor without Him. (Revelation 3:17)

Jesus is called the Word, the Word is the Bible and His Word is Spirit and life. (John 6:63). The Word was there in the beginning, when God spoke the universe into existence. (John 6:63) Everything that exists is being held together by the sound and the truth of His voice, which is the voice of the only objective truth. Everything is being held together by Jesus, who is the Word. (Revelation 19:13)

That ancient book called the Holy Bible is alive and breathing and will nourish all who are willing to receive it.  (Matthew 4:4)

His Word is Spirit and life.

That is why, since the beginning of time, satan attacked objective truth. He is always trying to discredit God’s Word and he is very good at deceiving people.

The reason I am sharing this with you, is not because I am perfect, but because I am also a sinner that was saved by Jesus. Jesus didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. (Luke 5:32) It is not the healthy that needs a doctor, but the sick. (Mark 2:17)

I want to tell you, that God can do for you, what He did for me. He healed my broken soul, miraculously cured me from chronic depression and gifted me with eternal life. You can also be healed, know truth and find true fulfilment and peace in Christ. You can experience true freedom, because who the Son sets free, is free indeed. (John 8:36) And you don’t have to wonder about what happens after death, or fear death, you can be certain of your eternal destination.

I used to think my need to believe was perhaps wishful thinking or a false comfort to deal with the reality of death. But now I know the truth and I am empowered by it.

I know I am going to heaven to be with Jesus, because the Holy Spirit lives in me and testifies with my Spirit that I am a child of God and that I have eternal life. (Romans 8:16)

I know because I know. And this knowing is more real than anything else in my life.

It is real wishful thinking to imagine there is nothing beyond the grave, because then you won’t be held accountable for how you lived. It is foolish and arrogant to think you will close your eyes and it will be over forever. If you believe this, you are greatly deceived.

Perhaps you don’t believe in the devil or in God for that matter. But let me tell you, the battle between good and evil, in the spiritual realm you cannot see, is very real. God is real and His adversary called the devil, is also real. And so is heaven and hell. Scripture teaches that our battle on earth is not against flesh and blood, but against dark and evil spiritual forces in high places. (Ephesians 6:12)

Hell is a real place.

Your soul is eternal. After your natural death, eternity awaits in the presence of God in heaven, or in the absence of God in hell.

Hell is a horrific place and you don’t want to end up there. Why? Because even if you do not believe in God, you still experience love, joy and beauty in your life. (Matthew 5:45)

You might take it for granted or think you deserve good things. You don’t. All men and women have sinned and have fallen short of the Glory of God. None is righteous. ( Romans 3:10)

God is love and the creator of all that is good and beautiful. You do not want to spend eternity in a place void of His presence.

But God loved us fallen, sinful and rebellious humans so much that he gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ as a sin offering to the perishing world. (John 3:16) He died an excruciatingly painful and humiliating death on a cross to pay for our transgressions. (Isaiah 53:5)

By accepting Jesus as your personal saviour and by believing that God raised Him from the dead, that He is alive and by entering into a relationship with Him, we can be forgiven and made righteous in the eyes of God. Not by anything we did to deserve it, but only by His sacrifice, by His amazing grace and mercy. It is a gift and you only need to accept it. There is no other way to eternal life than through Jesus.

When you receive Him, you will be filled with His spirit and be born a second time, spiritually. You will be spiritually reunited with God. Mankind was created to be one in spirit with God, but because of sin, we were separated from Him.

Turn to God before it is too late.

It is not enough to know about God, you need to know Him personally and have a relationship with Him. If the Holy Spirit is not in you, you do not belong to Jesus and you do not have eternal life.

Some, who think they know who God is, and still reject Him or reject His church, do not know Him at all and have never encounterd Him.

But believe me, it is very possible to get to know Him really well, have intimacy with Him, encounter Him and enter into His glorious supernatural presence daily. He said in His Word, that he knocks at the door and if you will open for Him, He will come in and dine with you.

But if you do not seek Him, He will not give Himself to you. If you do not sincerely pursue Him and lay down your life, your ego and your rebellious, self-righteous attitude towards Him, you will die in your sins and go to hell. He doesn’t send you there, you make the choice.

Multitudes are in the valley of decision and time is running out for them.

God commands the saved to spread the good news of free salvation. That is why I can’t keep my ‘offensive religious ideas’ to myself. I do not want you to die without Jesus. I want you to find the truth and experience the peace He gives that surpasses all understanding.

Those who are perishing think Christians are crazy and believe ridiculous things, but let me tell you this, only Spirit filled Christians know and understand true reality. Non-believers live in the Matrix. Those who belong to Christ, took the red pill. I can say this with absolute certainty, because I am empowered by the Spirit of God who dwells in me.

The Holy Spirit revealed so many things to me that I would have never been able to digest or accept in my natural state, before I was saved. And that is why you will find all true Spirit filled Christians speak the same language. They talk the same, walk the same, understand each other and have similar spiritual experiences. We are united by the Spirit and like Jesus, belong to a Kingdom that is not of this world. Non-believers think we are foolish, but that is because they are spiritually dead and are unable to understand spiritual things. They only understand what they know, their natural state and natural environment. The natural world was created by God, but is by no means, all there is.

The real fool is the one that thinks he knows it all and doesn’t realise his mind is extremely inferior to the mind of Christ. God’s thoughts are above our thoughts, otherwise He wouldn’t be God.

It is actually so arrogant of us to try and figure God out, to think that He is like us and has to fit into our understanding of reality. Our little minds can not comprehend Him.

Perhaps you grew up in church, or in religion and you have decided religion and God is not for you. Just remember, it is a relationship with Jesus that will get you into heaven, not religion.

Keep in mind, it was the religious people who hated and crucified Jesus 2000 years ago. People will always fail you, even Christians, but God will never fail you.

Put your trust in Him, who is eternal and perfect.

Don’t wait another minute. Today is the day of your salvation.

Don’t wait until it is too late. Make a choice today.
